“Things have become necessary to us, a development never originally intended” -A.W. Tozer.
Creation of man began with the external and the internal. Externally, God created things whose entire existence is to portray the glory of the Creator. Creation was laid out in a subordinate way for the enjoyment and pleasure of man. It was never laid out to be a necessity. Internally, God created the necessity. Intrinsic in every human being he built a “shrine where none but God is worthy to come.”
What is the nature of man’s depravity? Every sin committed takes its root in a preferring of the creation above the Creator. Romans 1:25 says we all have “exchanged the truth for a lie.” Humanity as a whole has tasted the glories of the everlasting fountain of God and has preferred something eternally less. Our preferring has been twofold: 1. Creation was never created with the potential to become a necessity. 2. Our hearts were created in a way that needs the sustenance of something greater than creation. In fact, creation’s only purpose is to point us to that which is greater than itself. This is not an option, this is the way we were created. A Christian must seek to no longer forsake the greater for the enjoyment of the lesser. Instead, we need to rely on the grace of God to frees us. For God has freed us to know the greatness that He alone is worthy of.
