Such a good sounding pedal. He has, however, been trying a couple out, like the Voyager by Walrusaudio and replacing it/them with some of the other drive pedals he had on his board (such as the Keeley overdrive, the RAT, the signadrive act), . The thing with Jeffrey is he doesn’t like to stack his overdrives. Because of this he has a couple more overdrive/dirt pedals than the average guitar player in order to create the different gain stages that one would have if they did stack their overdrives. Thanks for the inquiry!

It’s hard to describe the Droff. He’s amazing. Really just one of the best guitar players out there. He continues to write and compose amazing music at Hillsong Church. Here is his board for his upcoming U.S.A. tour: He still continues to play a pretty nice array of Duesenberg guitars through a equally nice set of Vox, matchless and Jackson amps.

Here are the pedals I see: Looks like he is still running through through a Timon Klein Bypass looper and I am sure he has some tap tempos connected through his junction box at the top:

1. Ernie Ball VP Jr.- with Boss TU-2 Tuner (“TUNA”)

2. Fulltone Clyde Wah

3. Cusack Scruzz (thanks Andrew Yang!)

4. Digitech Whammy IV

Jeffrey Kunde. Love this guy. There are some people that are...

Jeffrey Kunde. Love this guy. There are some people that are musicians, some that are guitarists and some that are Jeffrey Kunde. Jeffrey plays many instruments and really brings his past experience with music/instruments to influence any new ones that he picks up. Enter Jesus Culture. Jeffrey was asked to play guitar and has brought this aspect of musicianship to his playing that is truly rare. One of the biggest aspects of his guitar playing that has really added to his overall tone has been his improvement in effects (not the pedals themselves, but the use of the pedals to add great sound to whatever he is doing). Here is his most recent board (even though he has already switched some overdrives):

Here is his signal chain:

1. JHS Buffer-To send a strong impedance signal through his cable run to his amp.

2. Timon Klein 8 looper-Mainly for his dirt pedals

3.a. Keeley (2 Knob Compressor)- Used mainly for clean picking or slide to add sustain and a little big of a boost

3.b. CmatMods Signa Comp- Used for making his picking tone really bright

4. Zvex Fuzz Factory-For some minor Fuzz parts in some solos

5. Little Green Wonder by Mad Professor- His favorite overdrive, super transparent, super good.

6. Keeley Modded Rat-A higher gain distortion pedal that allows him to cut through the band

7. Keeley Overdrive (recently replaced by aWalrusAudio Voyager)-Used for a little more gain than the LGW

8. Cusack-Tap-A-Whirl-For tremolo

9. EHX Micro Pog-For octaves

10. Ernie Ball VP Jr. w/ tuner out (Boss TU-2)-For volume

11. Strymon Timeline (Replaces his timefactor for this)

12. EXH Big Box Memory Man-Really used for his atmosphere stuff

13. Strymon Blue Sky Reverb-Used also for some atmosphere. Lately the trend of a lot of guitar players has been to overload delays for some good atmospheric swells. I think that when people start downgraded the delays and start upping the reverb the atmosphere sounds a little loss muddled.

14. Boss RV-5- More verb

15. Xotic RC Booster- This is his last pedal. Always on, and always cleaning up tone.

All this is powered by a GigRig power supply with the Radial SGI TX cable extenders (this allows longer runs of cord from the amp to the pedalboard/guitar without sucking any type of tone. One goes to the amp, the other goes to the guitar/pedalboard.

Guitars are mainly his Gretsch Duo Jet, a White Falcon and a Fender Telecaster American Standard.

As for as amps, he uses a ‘93 Vox AC30 6TB with the vintage speakers, a Matchless DC30, a Jackson Britain 3.0and a new Tioga EEzekiel.

You can check out an explanation of how he uses all of his effects by clicking here: Jesus Culture

I have been meaning to do this for a while. I have seen all...

I have been meaning to do this for a while. I have seen all of these new services offered that set up pedalboards very neatly and clean with all the wires zip-tied and lengthened to perfection underneath a board. I have been wanting to try this for myself for a while now. It never looked too difficult and I like side projects. I thought it would be fun…it wasn’t. I thought it would be easy…it was hard. I am not usually a fan of big boards but when I originally bought my smaller board, I bought a fairly large case. This caused some unforeseen problems that I didn’t want to deal with. I was running one pedal power 2+ and had to continuously lift the board out of the tray of the case and then hook up some separate 1-spot plugs (which caused a lot of 1-spot problems). I knew what I wanted for a new board, it had to fit into the bottom of my tray perfection, and have: One power outlet, no cables on top, a true bypass strip, a buffer and amp plug-in that runs underneath the board and an external tap that could control my various timed effects. After many lava cables, zip-ties and blisters on my fingers I came up with this:

Here is my signal:

T1M mini buffer

Timon Klein true bypass 12 looper:

Wah- For..wah

Diamond compressor- Not really to squash, but to push my amp during some solos and to serve as an eq

Whammy-Good for about one song a month. But, seriously.

Timmy- Best transparent overdrive…ever. Best…ever.

T1M Pearl-this thing is a monster. Replaced my Fulldrive 2 with this.

RC Booster-Leave it on pretty much the whole time, used mainly for eq.

POG- To make my guitar not sound like a guitar

Tap-a-Whirl- Cool tremolo with an external tap

Boss DD-20-Standard…but really good

DL4- for pads…and other weird delays

Timefactor-My main delay with a T1M aux switcher.

RV-5-Pretty much leave this on the whole time and play with the effects level with my foot

The DL4, Tap-a-whirl, DD-20 and Timefactor all hook up to the back of the looper and are connected to one output for the tap. This lets me control four…yes…ALL four timed effects with a single tap tempo. It’s a big board, yes. Still getting some kinks out with it but for the most part I am pleased. Everything is ran via 2 pedal power 2+s.

Wrestling With God

Genesis 32 has always been a passage that has caught my eye. I know that many Christians (I especially being one) have felt as if they have been in situations that resemble a “wrestling” with God. Few, however, can compare their wrestlings with the physical exertion and exhaustion that Jacob endured that night. The passage itself provides a powerful lesson to the periods of our lives where we feel we are wrestling with God. Now, many argue whether the “man” that Jacob wrestled with was either God or an angel. I don’t know. I lean towards God, but the application nonetheless remains the same.

I. What placed Jacob into a situation where he wrestled with God?

Above and beyond anything, the struggle Jacob faced was a struggle to keep his identity. Throughout his life, Jacob’s wit and cunningness caused him to deceive many people. This resulted in taking of Esau’s birthright, receiving the blessing of Isaac, and the culmination of not only two wives, but also most of Laban’s positions. Even amongst this deceit, it seems that in almost everything that Jacob did, he was blessed. Through this, one can see how each step of deceit that Jacob took, served as a building block to fuel the flame of Jacob’s prideful identity. It is easy to see how Jacob could have esteemed all his blessings to his own cunningness. Little did he know, he could not sin his way out of the blessings of the most high God. This all came to a halt, however, when Jacob returned home and feared that his brother Esau would kill him. These circumstances caused a lapse in judgement that shoved Jacob into his wrestlings. Two things should be noted:

        A. Jacob’s lack of faith in the promises of God led him to wrestle with God. There are three signs in chapter 32 alone that should have comforted Jacob:

God sent angles to meet Jacob and accompany him on his safe journey (32:1)

God commanded Jacob to return to his country so that he could bless him (32:9)

God promised Jacob an incomprehensible blessing (32:12)

     B. Jacob’s life was built on his identity, this led him to fear for his own life

“Please deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, for I fear him, that he may come and attack me, the mothers and the children.” Jacob feared for the possessions that the Lord alone blessed him with.

II. The Wrestling

A. Jacob’s State- Jacob was left alone (32:4), leaving him both vulnerable and acceptable to the wrestle match with God. This removed any type of comfort that his family or his possessions provided him with. God never wrestles with those who cannot put all of their attention on the match. There is no way to wrestle with God when the distractions of life are all around us.

B. The duration of the struggle-Jacob wrestled the whole night (32:4b). This wasn’t a short match. Jacob’s identity was on the line. It should be noted that a person cannot wrestle with God if they are simply looking for a quick fix.

C. Jacob’s Opponent- Jacob’s opponent held the outcome of the match the entire time. A couple of things should be noted here:

God alone determined when the wrestling match would end (32:25).

God’s ability to end the match showed his superior strength and his knowledge of Jacob’s weakness

God would not have ever let Jacob win. The ease with which the match was ended showed that the longevity of the match was a simple tactic to keep Jacob at bay. God doesn’t wrestle with people that will throw in the towel right away. Likewise, God will not prevail, let alone start a match against us until it is proven that we are willing to wrestle long enough. Verse 25 says, “When the man saw that he did not prevail against Jacob…” Jacob’s willingness to wrestle allowed him to be broken and blessed the way he was.

III. The Result: All these were the result of Jacob’s match with God

If one wrestles with God long enough, they will be broken

However, if one clings to God in their brokenness, they will be blessed. Just as Jacob clung to his identity of deceit and worldly possessions that originally got him into the wrestling match, so he too fervently clung to the man he wrestled with once he was broken. Why did Jacob cling to his opponent? Jacob realized the superior, and staked his life upon his opponent’s blessing.

God breaks his people with the intention of blessing them

Jacob received the blessing of a new identity. It seems as if for the first time, the God of Isaac and Abraham finally became the God of Jacob. God was no longer the family God, just as clearly as Abraham saw God, so too, Jacob’s eyes were open to the reality of Him.

One of the most (if not most) recognized guitar players in the worship music scene. He has faithfully played with Chris Tomlin throughout the years, creating and writing the most popular worship songs churches have used in their sets. Anyone who has played on a worship team has probably played some of the melodies and licks that Daniel has written. Now, just like most worship guitar players, Daniel tends to change gear ALL the time. If you want to check out his past boards, go ahead and jump to Nathan Wright’s blog .
Daniel uses a 70’s Telecaster, a 70’s Les Paul, a Gretsch Country Classic, a Epiphone Casino and a Collings guitar. As for the amps, Daniel runs a Matchless SC30 and a Vox AC30 TBX reissue (which he runs pretty dark).

My hope is that a long ascension is never simultaneously a long decline. I never want the facade of improvement or progress to eventually be revealed as a period of complacency or degeneration. The difficult part, however, is figuring out how to avert this state. Colossians 2:6 states, ”Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him.” I received Christ through grace and faith. While theology, practicality and doctrine might have been a little blurry, the things that were clear were: one name- Jesus Christ; one book- The Bible. As my walk has continued, however, utter dependence upon God has been easily replaced by a sense of independence. The breath of God which allowed my dry bones to come alive has often been replaced by a sense of self-existence. The remedy against this state is to walk in Christ the way we received Him.

I have thought about three aspects of my receiving of Christ that must be applied to my walk if my continual ascension is not one of decline.

1. Grace and Faith: We are all saved by both. Ephesians 2:8, “For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, not a result of works.” The grace and faith that received Christ with such dependency needs to be present in one’s current walk with the Lord. One can look upon their past salvation with praise, however, must look to the present or future understanding that the past graces of God only point to future graces. These future graces are embraced through faith. As G.K. Chesterson says, “The man who has thus praised progress does not think it necessary to progress any further.” Any reflecting on our progress must not be an end, but a means to further progress.

2. A Reliance on the Holy Spirit: The Holy Spirit opened my eyes to the things of Christ. Therefore, every morning, every evening, every hour and second I need to utterly rely on the Spirit to open my eyes to the things of the Father. I need the Spirit to break my heart from what breaks the heart of the Father.

3. A Position of Effective Reliance: 2 Corinthians 4:6 says, “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” I received Christ through a command that created what it called for. When Christ commanded, “Lazarus, come forth!” The command to come created the actually coming. Just as God the Father in Genesis stated,” Let there be light,” and light was created, so he spoke those words over the darkness of my heart, and light immediately shone. Just as he told Lazarus to rise from the death that swallowed him, so my soul was commanded and awakened amidst my utter depravity. So, just as I received Christ in this way, I need to position myself (BY GRACE, FAITH and the SPIRIT) in a way where I can hear the effectual commands of God. I want neither a lack of faith nor a reliance upon self which prevents me from being effected and transformed by the power, grace and love of the Divine.

Therefore, we all need to walk in Christ in the way we have received him.

James Duke. The Duke. All the Bright Lights. John Mark McMillan. Need I say more? This guy is an amazing guitarist. He does stuff which no one else does and has a sound that no one else has. He has always stayed true to himself as a guitar player, which has prevented him from attempted to replicate the sounds of others. He takes what he likes from others and puts them into his own collage of uniqueness. The result: This dude just gets it. It is always refreshing to hear someone who is a true artist in the sense that they do what they want to do. They poor out who they are into their music. It might not be what others are doing, but it is what they love. For the Duke, this has worked. Plus, he has a blog (here), which makes him even cooler. But seriously, he goes through his gear and his approach and talks about he gets the sounds that he creates. Motley Customs set up his board, so this is from their website. Here’s his signal:

Jhs Little Black Buffer

Dyna Comp (always left on)

Micro Pog (for octave ups and downs)

Ibanez TS9 (always left on, he is always playing around with the gain)

Paul Cochrane Timmy (usus this to stack with this TS9)

Divided by 13 Joyride - “Best sounding pedal that doesn’t sound like a pedal”

Cusack tap-a-whirl (for Tremolos)

Ernie Ball VP jr.

Deluxe memory man- “For being awesome”

Boss DD20 with external Tap

Boss TU2

Boss RV5 (Mainly set to the hall and modulation settings)

He has also been known to rock a JHS morning glory, JHS mini foot Fuzz, Zvex hard on, Zvex fuzz factory, Strymon El Capistan and Blue Sky Reverb, and some wahs

He mainly runs through a Matchless Chieftan 2x12 Combo and a 60’s Gretsch 6150T Combo. But he occasionally dabbles with a Vox and a Fender for recording (WHY NOT?!)

His guitars include a 1993 Fender American Standard Strat, a 2001 Fender Telecaster (1952 reissue), a Pedal Steel and Lap Steel, a Gretsch Anniversary Hollowbody (and it is a beauty!), Taylor 514ce, a 90’s Danelectro U2 and a Revelator Guitar S Type.

If you haven’t heard him, nows the time to stop reading and go listen. Your ear holes will be pleased with his ambient goodness and slide work.

Is Christ the Means or Was/Is He the End?

What is the purpose of the universe? Ephesians 1:5 and 6 says, “In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according the purpose of his will, to the praise of his glorious grace.” I believe that the purpose of the universe is the glory of God. This leads to the question, is Christ the means to this end, or is/was he the end itself? The first way to answer the question is that Christ is/was the end. Christ is the fullest manifestation of the glory of God. He ALWAYS will be. Ephesians 1:6 shows that the fullest manifestation of the glory of God is the glory of God’s grace. The fullest manifestation of the glory of God’s grace climaxes at the cross of Christ. The whole universe existed for that moment when Christ hung on the cross and declared, “It is finished.” That moment is what is and will the praise of God’s people FOREVER. We will never get past it. So yes, Christ fulfilled the end purpose of the universe. BUT, he is also the means. Something had to happen to sinful humanity in order for us to praise God. Our sins had to be forgiven, our unrighteousness had to be exchanged for the righteousness of Christ. Christ’s sacrifice became the means by which we could worship and adore Him. Therefore, by becoming the means, He became the end. By enabling us to worship Him, He Himself became the object of our worship for eternity. We will never get past the blood of Christ. That is what will be our praise forever and forever. O praise the One who paid my debt and raised this life up from the dead!

Future Grace by John Piper. Best book on grace that I have ever read. Seriously, I love Piper, but this is on a whole other level. 31 chapters to match 31 days out of the month, but I have found the need to read a chapter every other week because there is so much to chew on. Has led me deeper into worship and into a greater reliance on God. The thing is…its just straight gospel. I guess that’s always a good foundation for any book.

"The way to Heaven is ascending; we must be content to travel uphill, though it be hard and tiresome,..."

“The way to Heaven is ascending; we must be content to travel uphill, though it be hard and tiresome, and contrary to the natural bias of our flesh”

- Jonathan Edwards

"Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God."

“Prayer is not pulling God to my will, but the aligning of my will to the will of God.”

- E. As you become accepted into this world, you can never get enough of these beautiful machines. Here are my three dream guitars:

1. Duesenberg Starplayer TV Plus-Seriously these things are magical…just…magical

2. Grestch Country Classic Jr.- Don’t make these ones anymore but they sure are versatile. One of my favorite sounding guitars I have ever played.

3. 1959 Les Paul VOS-Seriously, the holy grail of the Paul’s series. Not only does it look the coolest, but it carries a punch tone wise also… Plus, it looks the coolest.

Stoked for this. New music coming out soon for Dallas (the band). A group of extremely talented musicians making great music. Taylor Johnson is the guitar player. All the new stuff that he is coming out with is pure genius. Incredibly tasteful with a certain coating of finesse. Here is his new pedalboard for the band:

Ernieball VP with Tuner out

Full Drive 2 Custom Shop (yellow Ferrari model)

Box of Rock

Xotic RC Booster

Diamond Tremolo (sweet addition)

Strymon El Capistan

Probably one of the best books I have read in a while. If you are a man and you are practically looking at ways to flame the fire of practical Christianity in your heart, this one is for you. Each chapter teaches you how to chase various “lions” of opportunity in your life rather than running away from them. Seriously, this book was a very easy, incredibly motivating read.

When it comes to sin, don’t wait for the miracle, ACT the...

When it comes to sin, don’t wait for the miracle, ACT the miracle.

Acting a miracle is different from working a miracle. If Jesus tells a paralyzed man to get up, and he gets up, Jesus works a miracle. But if I am the paralyzed man and Jesus tells me to get up, and I obey and get up, I act the miracle. If I am dead Lazarus and Jesus commands me to get up, and I obey, Jesus works the miracle, I act the miracle.

So when it comes to killing my sin, I don’t wait passively for the miracle of sin-killing to be worked on me, I act the miracle.
